A Review of Proverbs
A Review Of
Proverbs
There are outstanding qualities of works
selected throughout the amazing & insightful anthology on "Late
beginning". However, there was a lot more to love and appreciate in
Overcomer Ibiteye's Proverbs.
This flash fiction in all its excellence
approaches the subject (Late beginning) with an exemplary narrative filled
detail and a clear message which I think is the crux of any story. The writer
captivates the interest of her readers in her opening paragraphs. The story
begins with a broken voice plated with thick layers of disappointment. It was
felt across every line. Her discomfiture for not being the kind of woman she
would've loved to be. That woman "carved with shards of beauty". That
woman filled with vigour and strength "a warrior" she metaphors. But,
she ended up as an AIDS patient.
She vividly details her grandma's proverb which
was coated with the fear of losing her grandchild to the same societal plague
that left her daughter “…broken, used and single". A proverb she described
as one that "sung the hymn of my (her) youthful
troubles".
Moreover, Overcomer's language throughout this
story was the icing on the cake. It was the tool that held the moderators’
focus in place as the narrative saddled them across the shores. She didn't fail
to create a nexus between the theme and her story by highlighting how fresh
beginnings after wasted time could be difficult to start. A message; this shouldn’t be neglected by the young
people of this generation. A warning; an
advise that they should be careful of whom they walk with as they tend to take
on their traits.
